Experts in the field of networking debate whether two or more computers that are connected together using some form of communications medium constitute a network. Therefore, some works state that a network requires three connected computers. One such source, "Telecommunications: Glossary of Telecommunication Terms" states that a computer network is "A network of data processing nodes that are interconnected for the purpose of data communication". The term "network" being defined in the same document as "An interconnection of three or more communicating entities".[1] A computer connected to a non-computing device (e.g., networked to a printer via an Ethernet link) may also represent a computer network, although this article does not address this configuration.
Local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a small geographic area, like a home, office, or group of buildings.[1] Current LANs are most likely to be based on switched IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technology, running at 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000 Mbit/s, or on IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi technology. Each node or computer in the LAN has its own computing power but it can also access other devices on the LAN subject to the permissions it has been allowed. These could include data, processing power, and the ability to communicate or chat with other users in the network.[2]
